Week End Social Media Wrap Oct. 17th

This is the week that was in social media…

The digital music space may become even more crowded.  Reports surfaced that Facebook is investigating some sort of music delivery service. Facebook does not want to tangle with the big record companies over licensing issues nor build a service from scratch.  As such, they are looking to partner with a service in place such as Rhapsody or ILike.com.

Trouble at Twitter?  Twitter is wildly popular and one writer even said that it is one of the three essential web 2.0 tools ( Facebook and Wiki were the other two).  So why has Twitter popped up on and endangered list and also switched the guys at the head?  Well, there is no revenue stream as of yet.  Eventually, you have to make money.  Twitter
announced that their co-founders switch duties from chairman to CEO and vice-versa.   The change is likely to take it in a money making direction.

Microsoft is still eyeing Yahoo for a deal.  According to Microsoft, it still makes sense to partner up on an ad deal.  The Google/Yahoo experiment is still waiting approval and is facing pressure.

Playboy has decided to move away from DVDs and focus its content towards online delivery.  This is yet another sign that online video is maturing and will continue to eat away at traditional content delivery methods.

Briefs…

Google added a showbiz news channel to YouTube called PopTube…Bloggers have run afoul of 70 year old Canadian election laws in reporting results early…Nokia has begun to ship 4G network equipment…FBI reports that computer crime is on the rise.

Final Thought

A social lending site was launched by a South African firm as an alternative to current financial institutions.  It was only a matter of time before the free market found another way.  Look for more smart individuals to come up with interesting solutions to the current economical issues.

Have a good weekend.  Looking to post two items this weekend - I have the pictures, but not all of the video for the Temporary Urban Space Project, so I want to give a long overdue update and I promised some thoughts on creating a Google content ad.
