Strength in Numbers with Social Media

Today’s blog post is actually devoted to others.  Social media is still relatively new and for certain is always changing.  It is important to stay up by reading and researching and talking to others.  You gain strength this way.  That is one of the things I like most about social media, the fact that you can learn something new everyday.

So in today’s blog, we stand on the backs of others…

I enjoy listening to several podcasts, including two by CC Chapman, Accident Hash and Managing The Gray.   Today’s episode of Managing The Gray is helpful to social media participants, but I also think several of the ‘10 Things in Ten Minutes’ apply in everyday life, particularly reading and talking to others.I recommend checking it out for tips on Facebook, Flikr, Google and others.

One of the E-Newsletters that I read and often source content from is Marketing Sherpa.  There is an excellent case study on combining online activities with offline activities.  This is a philosophy we preach often in this space as well as to our clients.  Utilizing both methods to support each other can deliver  outstanding results as shown by this study:

RESULTS

The multichannel effort generated:
o 51 submissions in six weeks
o 57% increase in site traffic over the same time frame in 2007
o More than 300 qualified leads for their brick-and-mortar partners
o 20.1% boost in college-age visitors to their website

Campaign data also showed:

- contest page received more than 59,000 unique visitors and more than 251,000 page views
- average time on site per user was three minutes
- videos received more than 500 comments and more than 346,000 video views
- banners received more than 193 million impressions and more than 128,000 clicks
- the first email got a 17% open rate and a 1.7% clickthrough rate
- the second email got a 38% open rate and a 3% clickthrough rate

Participant videos went viral thru syndication to these social networking and video-sharing sites:
o YouTube
o MySpace
o Google Video
o AOL Video
o MSN Video
o metacafe
o Revver
o Yahoo! Video
o Dailymotion
o Veoh
o Crackle
o viddler
o brightcove

Campbell notes that 27% of video views came from metacafe, 26% from YouTube and 22% from Revver.

Those are some great numbers.  See how they got them by reading the full article here, but hurry - the post is only open to Oct. 23rd.
